THE MONTHLY TECH CHECK · ISSUE 02

Give guests Wi-Fi—
not your whole network.

One network change with a big payoff at home or at the office.

ONE NETWORK CHANGE WITH A BIG PAYOFF

Your main network may connect computers, printers, backups, cameras, and other devices you would rather keep private.

A guest network gives visitors internet access through a separate lane. It is useful at home, at the office, and anywhere you regularly share Wi-Fi.

1

Turn on the guest network

Look in your router’s app or settings for Guest Wi-Fi. Give it a recognizable name that does not reveal your address or surname.

2

Use a separate password

Do not reuse your main Wi-Fi or router-admin password. Choose WPA2 or WPA3 security and use a password you can replace after a gathering or event.

3

Separate smart devices when possible

TVs, speakers, plugs, and cameras often receive fewer updates than computers. Put them on an IoT network—or the guest network if they still work correctly there.

4

Review the device list

Remove devices you no longer recognize, install any router update, and confirm that guests cannot see devices on your main network.

5

YOUR FIVE-MINUTE ACTION

Find the guest-network switch before company arrives.

Turn it on, connect your phone to test it, and save the guest password where you can share it without opening your router settings.

Guest Wi-Fi is a boundary, not a force field.

It reduces unnecessary access to your private devices, but every computer and phone still needs updates, strong passwords, and protection of its own.
